Ravenous nimmt uns gleich mit auf die Reise, der Kompass wird ausgerichtet und führt uns sicher durch unruhige Gewässer. Ein Sturm kommt auf, aber anstatt abzuhauen, bleibt man gechillt stehen und genießt den Wind in den Haaren und die Auswirkungen, die so ein Sturm mit sich bringt. Langsam und schleppend leitet man das Geschehen ein. Ein paar Sekunden Ruhe und dann ab in den viel gepriesenen Sturm. Gleich eine volle Ballerattacke zu Beginn mit thrashigem und melodischem Gitarrenspiel. Fett und ab in einen schnellen Midtempopart. Die Drums wirbeln herum und bauen unheimlich viel Druck auf. Die aggressiven Vocals erinnern mich ein wenig an Carcass zu Heartwork-Zeiten und auch das melodische Grundgerüst geht ein wenig in die Richtung. Ein sehr starker Einstieg. Rhythmus- und Tempowechsel stehen auf der Agenda. Dieses melodische Riffing ist ziemlich geil und bleibt sofort hängen. Ein verspieltes und treibendes Solo, welches dann noch langsam vorgetragen wird, erklingt und gibt dem Ganzen noch eine ganz gewisse Würze. Break, kurzes Basssolo und wieder Vollgas. Schockt und macht Laune. Wow, richtig geil. Auch von der Produktion gibt es nichts zu meckern. Bin vom Riffing vollends begeistert. Krasses Ding. Auch das melodische Spiel am Ende hat etwas. Brett!

Auf eine Einleitung wird verzichtet und die Jungs starten gleich mit dem ersten Track namens „Ravenous“. Hier zeigen die Diepholzer gleich, dass man in der schwedischen Melodic Death Metal-Szene verwurzelt ist. Aber man kopiert nicht, sondern versucht der Musik einen eigenen Stempel aufzudrücken. Hierzu mischt man die melodischen Riffs mit thrashigen Anleihen und installiert immer wieder groovige Passagen, um den Zuhörer zur körperlichen Ertüchtigung zu animieren. Auch gesanglich orientiert man sich an skandinavischen Vorbildern, da die keifenden Growls von Frontmann Gregor P. immer wieder an Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity) erinnern. Am Sound gibt es nichts zu meckern. Dieser ist druckvoll und klar und somit sind alle Details sehr gut zu hören. Der zweiten Titel „Beast“ ist dann etwas thrashiger als sein Vorgänger und anfangs hat man das Gefühl, dass die eingängigen Melodien fehlen. Diese bleiben auch großteils aus. Nur im Refrain sorgt man kurzfristig mit einer Passagen, die mich an alte IN FLAMES-Werke erinnert, für ein einfühlsames Erlebnis. In der dritten Nummer und zugleich dem Title-Track „Anthem Of The Rotten“ kehrt man dann wieder zu eingängigerer Gitarrenarbeit zurück. Damit kann man bei der Hörerschaft wieder für vertraute Töne sorgen. „Seance“ könnte glatt aus der Feder von AT THE GATES stammen und wird daher besonders dieser Hörerschaft gut gefallen. Auch im weiteren Verlauf bleibt man seinen Wurzeln treu und es findet sich wirklich kein schwacher Song auf der Scheibe. […]
Fazit:
SCYTHE BEAST liefern mit Anthem Of The Rotten ein mitreißendes Melodic Death/Thrash Metal-Werk ab. Mit der Musik spricht man die Fangemeinde von Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates und In Flames an und diese Fan-Bases kommen definitiv auf ihre Kosten. Einzig der dezent monotone Gesang kann nicht ganz mit der musikalischen Performance mithalten.
The album opens with Ravenous, which gives us a chance to catch our breath before racing ahead at full speed with devastating riffs and abrasive saturation, somewhere between Melodic Death and explosive Thrash Metal. The vocals contribute to the constant aggression, which barely lets up when the guitar and bass take the lead, then the pace slows down noticeably with Beast, which perfectly embraces its catchy Old School roots. The track is quite groovy, taking advantage of a jerky approach to really hit hard with a few accelerations, particularly on the chorus and solo, then it’s with Anthem of the Rotten, the eponymous track, that the band charges ahead and pours out darkness and dissonant harmonics. There is a short pause before the final eruption, then The Seance takes over with a contrast between its heavy rhythm and some more occult tones, but the track embraces its vindictive stance before moving on to the equally virulent Spawn of the Stillborn Lord, which doesn’t even let us catch our breath before striking. No surprises here with this track, which shifts from a double pedal avalanche to brutal blasts in the blink of an eye, nor on Heirloom, which, although a little longer, remains in the furious vein of Death/Thrash Metal under the vocalist’s fire, taking advantage of certain moments to allow harmonics to come and tear us apart. Some passages are perfect for headbangers, but the visceral final heralds the transition to Purify by Flame, which starts slowly and with an ominous sound before settling into its cruising pace and proving very effective, taking advantage of its natural groove between two choruses. The sound becomes morbid again for the doom roots of The Carrion Marshes, then finally very melancholic when the roars join the mix, which remains fairly gentle until a totally unexpected explosion that makes the rest of the song much wilder. The track returns to its initial slowness to die in its filth, then picks up steam again on Warp, the last composition, which once again takes advantage of its most stirring influences to give us one last chance to bang our heads frantically before closing the album.
With its roots in Death, Thrash, and furious melodies, Scythe Beast hits hard! While Anthem of the Rotten returns to the basics of these styles to offer an extremely aggressive and abrasive Old School sound, the album does not copy the successes of the genres and will leave us with a sore neck for quite some time.
After completing the line-up, the band released debut album “Breeding Devastation” (2016) and then second full length “Indicted for Misconception” (2021).
Scythe Beast is live the complete package for every neck owner: sometimes slow and dragging, then again with the gas pedal pressed to the floor on the fast lane. Sometimes melodic, and immediately followed by a heavy riff barrage. Here, you still scream with heart!
